Congratulations to Mal Corboy of Mal Corboy Design Ltd on winning the Residential Category of the Corian® Design Awards – Edition 2, 2008. Mal is a multi award winning certified Kitchen Designer with prestigious accolades such as New Zealand Kitchen Designer of the year. To share his design knowledge and skills, Mal holds regular design seminars within New Zealand, and his work has been featured in numerous design magazines around the world. Mal receives his Corian® Design Award for his exceptional, striking kitchen design in this beautiful heritage home.

On beginning this project, Mal’s clients were very open to a kitchen that made a statement. The kitchen space was extended to take in an adjoining room, which was previously used as a gym. The new space created a very long, narrow room that now provided views of the front garden, looking down to the sea views.

“As my clients were very design focused, I chose Corian® for the main island and scullery tops. My clients loved the seamless look of the product with no open joins, along with the warm feel”, says Mal.

“My design included a long island that is 6.2 metres long. With no open joins and my choice of double Corian® integrated sinks with a recessed drainer – it definitely created that seamless feel”, adds Mal.

Mal used Corian® to clad the cabinetry front and sides of part of the island flowing all the way to the floor. Also featured is an LED blade light through the centre of the front to create impact. The Corian® was cantilevered at the other end for seating and effect.

The cabinetry features frameless glass that is deco glazed to match the Glacier White Corian®. This has been contrasted with bright pink future glass in a ‘Fleur-de-lis’ pattern that was matched from a wallpaper pattern.

The Star range hoods, Gaggenau appliances, and Sub Zero fridge were all chosen to create a wonderfully opulent effect and work well in the overall design.

“The overall effect is a kitchen that is simple in design, but has many features and is a striking statement that the client loves”, says Mal about the design components.
